It is important to realize that the ideation and brainstorming steps of the process are not over once they are completed the first time – the concept generation process is cyclical. As new information and new circumstances continue to crop up at all stages of the process, the team may be required to go back into brainstorming mode, for example when refining the direction or approach on an already accepted solution.
Professor Ulrich has led the development efforts for many products, including medical devices and sporting goods, and is the founder of several technology-based companies. As a result of this work, he has received more than 20 patents. His current research concerns innovation, entrepreneurship, and product design.

Treating such contemporary design and development issues as identifying customer needs, design for manufacturing, prototyping, and industrial design, Product Design and Development by Ulrich and Eppinger presents in a clear and detailed way a set of product development techniques aimed at bringing together the marketing, design, and manufacturing functions of the enterprise. I teach product design and development at a major research university and I swear by this book. I often tell my students, "you can take every book from my office but leave me with this one." While it may not be the best or easiest introduction for younger students, e.g., first-year college students, it an excellent reference text that I have been using for nearly ten years.

Several authors prescribe common steps to be taken when developing products, which are found in literature by Ulrich and Eppinger [2012], Pugh [1991] and Pahl et al.
